Strategy 2030

The Opportunity

The next decade will decide who inherits a livable world.
Sustainable, resilient, and regenerative infrastructure is essential for climate action and as a foundation for poverty reduction, economic opportunity, and shared prosperity.

Half of the infrastructure the globe needs by 2040 to support a thriving society and planet hasn’t been built yet. Now is our chance to build sustainable, resilient, regenerative infrastructure that

  • Helps people meet their needs today without compromising future generations' ability to meet theirs
  • Keeps working through shocks and stresses while protecting the communities it serves
  • Actively restores the ecosystems and communities around it

‍The choices made today about how infrastructure is planned, financed, and delivered will shape the resilience and prosperity of people and the planet for generations to come. The way we plan, design, and pay for clean drinking water, sanitation systems, renewable power, and affordable green transport will determine whether future generations are protected from or exposed to climate shocks, whether wealth gaps close or expand, and whether our fragile ecosystems recover or collapse.

About us

A globally trusted partner.

15+ years accelerating sustainable infrastructure.

Global Infrastructure Basel is the world’s first NGO built exclusively to make sustainable, resilient, and regenerative infrastructure the standard across the Global South and Global North. Since 2010, we have worked at the intersection of community, policy, finance, and nature to ensure what gets built protects people and the planet for generations to come.

Our Vision

is a world in which infrastructure enables a safe, equitable, and thriving society on a healthy planet.

Our Mission

is to accelerate and mainstream a transition to sustainable, resilient, and regenerative infrastructure.

strategic objectives

We were founded with a clear purpose: to advance sustainable, resilient and regenerative infrastructure that protects people and the planet.
We integrate three cross-cutting strategic objectives across our programmes:

Demonstrate and scale solutions

that strengthen market confidence, enable better planning, and unlock investment into sustainable, resilient, and regenerative infrastructure.

Empower next-generation leaders

particularly in underserved communities, to co-design and drive sustainable, resilient, and regenerative infrastructure from the ground up.

Strengthen the ecosystem of actors and catalyse action

to accelerate the uptake of sustainable, resilient, and regenerative infrastructure.

Mainstreaming sustainable, resilient, and regenerative infrastructure
Our initiatives seek to:

Champion equitable policy frameworks and standards

  • We work to reshape the criteria for planning, financing, and procuring infrastructure.
  • We collaborate with industry leaders, practitioners, and institutions to integrate essential standards into infrastructure policy frameworks to ensure long-term, equitable benefits.
  • The need is undeniable: a recent survey found that while 92% of OECD countries have adopted green public procurement policies, only half give the people enforcing them any real guidance on how. We help close that gap.

Share the proof that investors need

  • Investors need confidence before they commit capital, and that confidence comes from evidence. We gather data, set the benchmarks, and create case studies. The stories we tell boost investor confidence in funding infrastructure built to protect the planet, restore ecosystems, and provide access to equitable prosperity.
  • We have worked with major project developers and investors on standards and labels across projects representing more than $80 billion across 47 countries. This creates clear rules and shared trust, which cuts costs, speeds up innovation, and reduces financial risk.
  • The FAST-Infra Label, for which GIB is the operational backbone, was established together with over 100 institutions and is now in use across more than three dozen countries and registered on over 200 projects. 80% of them are already built and delivering essential services to the people who need them.

Expand technical capabilities for creating real impact

  • We put practical skills and tools into the hands of the people doing the work.
  • We train planners, engineers, and financiers to design and fund sustainable infrastructure, with particular focus on young practitioners and nature-based solutions. That includes our Nature for Catchments methodology, which is already reducing flood risk from Greece to Iceland, and practical training for thousands of professionals from Brazil to Vietnam in FAST-Infra Label verification.
  • Through projects like Pathways2Resilience and Re-Value, we build partners’ capacities and provide advice for building sustainable funding streams, mobilising regional networks, and driving tools for accelerated, scalable solutions.

Empower next-generation leaders with real decision-making power

  • We back young leaders, particularly in underserved communities, to shape infrastructure decisions at the local, national, and global level.
  • Nearly 11,000 young people across 10 cities on four continents are already co-designing the infrastructure they’ll inherit, actively shaping what’s built through our Safe and Sound Cities programme.

Strengthen global collaboration to do more together

  • We connect the people who can get this done and do it right. We help bring resources and respect to communities too often excluded from the conversation, ensuring their good ideas and proven solutions aren’t ignored for lack of connections or capital.
  • We develop deep and deliberate collaboration, convening local leaders and government, funders and financiers, insurers, engineers, and civil society across more than 50 countries and 150 cities to identify and solve problems better together.
  • Through our NATALIE project, 20 regions across Europe have adopted nature-based solutions designed alongside local communities.

Our Conviction

We believe every investment is a decision about who matters.

That’s why at Global Infrastructure Basel (GIB) we know the world must act now to do things differently and do them right. When we do, infrastructure pays for itself many times over, generating income and savings that then finance the next generation of infrastructure.

Theory of change

From vision to impact — mapping the strategies, actions, and outcomes that drive meaningful and lasting transformation

Our Theory of Change illustrates the steps and defines the logic behind the transformation, showing how targeted actions lead to systemic and sustainable improvements.
If
GIB demonstrates that tools such as the FAST-Infra Label can lead to improved design, implementation and financing of infrastructure projects and policies and outcomes that benefit people and ecosystems
And
if we demonstrate the superior business case of sustainable infrastructure, including better risk adjusted returns, improved revenue stability and decreased insurance premiums
Then
we will shift the global and regional discourse on the actions, incentives and policies that are needed to bring about sustainable, resilient and regenerative infrastructure development
So
decision-makers and opinion leaders globally and regionally will accelerate the transition to sustainable, resilient and regenerative societies infrastructure as the norm, rather than the exception.
Ultimately leading to sustainable, resilient and regenerative societies and ecosystems.
