Aim

Building Capacity for Resilient Infrastructure in Emerging Economies

Develop and disseminate three Knowledge Products for infrastructure developers and public sector officials in low and middle-income countries to enable them to incorporate resilience and climate change issues when developing new infrastructure projects.

The sole responsibility for the content of this website lies with GIB and the project and in no way reflects the views of the European Union or European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). Neither the European Union nor CINEA can be held responsible for them.
Challenge

Lack of Common Understanding of Resilient Infrastructure

Lack of Common Understanding of Resilient Infrastructure

The current global context of climate change, rapid urbanization and population growth places populations in developing and emerging economies in a vulnerable position. The key barrier to investment flows to the ‘right infrastructure’ is mainly due to a lack of common understanding of what the ‘right infrastructure’ is, and how risk mitigation, and ESG benefits creation should be assessed and communicated.

Solution

Knowledge Products to Guide Resilient Infrastructure Development

GIB was engaged by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) ,  to provide project developers and public sector officials with the appropriate knowledge and guidance to increase the understanding of resilience and climate issues in infrastructure and how this impacts and affects outcomes. In this project GIB developed and disseminated three knowledge products to accomplish this objective:

  1. A Toolkit for Infrastructure Disaster Risk Resilience: inventory of available tools, which if implemented, would increase the resilience of infrastructure projects.
  2. Policy Level Guidance in disaster Resilient Infrastructure for public sector officials: guidance document which unpacks elements of the SuRe® Standard that are most relevant to disaster risk reduction.
  3. Case study report: a five-case study report which details examples of projects which have successfully implemented disaster risk reduction and resilience-oriented measures and in some cases analyzed through the SuRe® SmartScan.
